The Arts

A source of inspiration and enjoyment

Art

KS1 and KS2

From Year 1 up to Year 6, each academic year, 3 x units of art must be taught. Every year group must teach a drawing unit, a painting
unit and either a sculpture or digital media unit. This third unit of work alternates each year to allow progression across each phase. At
Hautes Capelles we do not religiously follow a scheme, but teachers can use Kapow or CUSP unity to support their units or work or
utilise their own classroom practice along with experiences and ideas to plan their own art lessons, ensuring that the entitlements are
being met and the objectives from the Guernsey curriculum are being taught.

Sketchbooks
The children’s work can be recorded in their sketchbook. This follows them up from Reception to Year 6 to show progression and gives
the children opportunities to look back on the art work they have already completed. Depending on the final outcome they may create
work on different forms of media. We like to showcase their final pieces on displays around the school or to be part of the Hautes
Capelles’ Art Gallery

Lessons
Each art lesson should have a clear objective that the children are aiming to achieve. During a lesson the teacher will model to the
children what they are expected to do and will then give the children time to explore and independently carry out their art. The teacher
will give the children advice during the lesson to ensure they feel confident with what they are being asked to do. Teacher’s must use the
correct, technical vocabulary and teach the children the skills they need in order to complete the task. During the lesson at some point,
teachers need to provide recall and revisit opportunities to allow children to secure and develop their knowledge and understanding.

Music

Children are positive about music and singing in our school. Our curriculum and materials help staff and pupils build a solid foundation of essential knowledge and skills.

The music curriculum demonstrates progression throughout the school. We follow Kapow primary which ensures coverage and progress are consistent. Music units include the components of listening, performing, composing, history of music and inter-related dimensions of music: pulse, pitch, dimension and dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and musical notation.

During their time at Hautes Capelles children take part in yearly carol concerts, weekly singing assemblies and two performances, 1 in each key stage.  They are also given the opportunity to join the school choir which is run as a lunchtime club. We are currently developing new opportunities for musicians and singers to perform more frequently and in the community.

During Year 2 and 4 the children are part of a wider opportunities program where they are taught by music specialists and given the opportunity to learn an instrument.

Design Technology

Children and young people live in an age of fast-moving science, design and technology. This area of learning is fundamental to exploring, understanding and influencing the natural and made worlds in which we live. (Bailiwick of Guernsey Curriculum.)

At Hautes Capelles we aim to give the children the opportunity to explore through designing, creating and evaluating.  When completed successfully these processes allow the children to achieve design and technology projects. Teachers plan DT units using Kapow.  Throughout the school  children undertake units either independently, with a partner or as part of a group.

Each unit follows a 5 strand format:

  • Explore/investigate/research
  • Specification
  • Ideas and planning
  • Production/creation and development
  • Reflection and evaluation

The DT curriculum has six key areas

  • Mechanisms
  • Structures
  • Textiles
  • Cooking and nutrition
  • Electrical systems
  • Digital world

The first four key areas are covered in both KS1 and KS2 . Electrical systems and Digital World are introduced in, and covered in both phases of KS2.

EYFS follow their own curriculum basing projects on their current topic. The emphasis is on introducing the children to equipment that they will be using frequently in the classroom and to consider the safe use of the items. The children are encouraged to design and evaluate their projects as this is a skill which they will continue to develop as they progress through the school.

Progression of both skills and vocabulary are vital to successful learning in DT consequently staff are aware of  students’ prior learning and use the same vocabulary whilst also introducing new terminology.

Through the units which we deliver the children develop an awareness of risks, hazards and safety issues.  They  learn how to use equipment safely and responsibly with control and accuracy.

At Hautes Capelles, we believe high quality teaching and learning within the Arts enriches childens’ learning and are a source of inspiration and enjoyment.

They provide contexts in which children and young people learn to communicate their thoughts and emotions, use their imaginations, experiment and develop creativity.

Pupils at Hautes Capelles participate in a range of art forms - including art and design, drama, music and dance. Helping learners become responsive, critical and appreciative. They discover the value of discipline and practice and, in resounding to the work of others, they gain insights into different viewpoints, identities, traditions and cultures.

The Arts makes a key contribution to learners’ personal, social and emotional development and to their growth as confident individuals. It enables them to participate in and respond to the creative and cultural life of their communities. Working as artists and designers they are encouraged to develop their own voice and actively collaborate in order to communicate with a variety of audiences through different media and contexts.
