Geography Curriculum

An equal focus on wellbeing & academic development.

At Hautes Capelles, children are encouraged and inspired to investigate the world around them, from the Bailiwick to the global environment.

KS1 and KS2

Through our teaching of Geography we will inspire the children to think like Geographers.  We will encourage them to provoke and provide answers to Geographical questions.  Our aim is to promote  curiosity and excite the children about the possibilities of what the world has to offer for them to explore and experience.

Engagement in Geography

In Geography lessons at Hautes Capelles Primary School the children are engaged by:

  • using fieldwork, first-hand experience and secondary sources to locate and investigate the geographical features of a range of places and environments, including their own locality, a contrasting area in The Bailiwick or United Kingdom and a different locality in another country.
  • learning about and developing informed views and opinions on local, national and global issues such as sustainability, climate change, economic inequality, and their impact on people, places and environments in the past and the present.
  • applying their knowledge and understanding in real-life contexts, relating it to the world around them and visiting places to learn about geography.
  • building on previous knowledge and revisiting prior knowledge
  • undertaking investigations and enquiries, using various methods, media and sources.
  • comparing, interpreting and analysing different types of evidence from a range of sources.
  • using a range of resources to support their learning e.g. maps, photographs, pictograms, charts, survey and measurements
  • using appropriate technical language linked to key areas of learning.

Differentiation

All children will be catered for to achieve the objective of the lesson.

  • All children will have access to key geographical vocabulary (often through Word aware)
  • Planned activities will be inclusive to all but recorded outcomes may differ, where appropriate
  • Progress can be measured in different ways and does not always mean a written outcome
  • Enquiry questions enable all children to respond in different ways, appropriate to their needs and abilities

Reflection

Time to review and revisit the ‘Sticky stuff’ – this can be after a lesson, after a unit or some time in the future. This can take the form of discussion, sticky stuff pages, quizzes or low stakes quick fire questions to review previous learning.
