Maths Curriculum

An equal focus on wellbeing & academic development.

Maths Curriculum Intent

In our school, Maths introduces children to concepts, skills and thinking strategies that are essential in everyday life and support learning across the curriculum.  The children will  learn to explore and explain their ideas using equipment, symbols, diagrams, spoken and written language.

Learners should build secure knowledge of the following:

  • the range of ways mathematics can be used to solve practical problems, model situations, make sense of data and inform decision making
  • different types of numbers and what they represent
  • how numbers can be used for measurement, quantification and comparison and applied in different contexts
  • how to use geometry to explore, understand and represent shape and space
  • how likelihood and risk can be understood, quantified and used in everyday life.
  • how to make informed financial choices regarding saving, investing, borrowing, generating income, profit and debt.

We ensure that the way the children are taught maths is consistent across the school.

This enables the children to know and use the appropriate resources, progressive strategies and correct vocabulary. All classes have similar maths displays and follow a similar format to the teaching and learning.

Maths Vocabulary
Maths Lesson

EYFS to Year 6

Teachers often use informal, everyday language in mathematics lessons before or
alongside technical mathematical vocabulary. Although this can help children to grasp
the meaning of different words and phrases, we find that a structured approach to
the teaching and learning of vocabulary is essential if children are to move on and
begin using the correct mathematical terminology as soon as possible.
