GOLD !!!! We are a UNICEF Gold Rights Respecting School

The school is delighted to share that we have been awarded Gold status as a Rights Respecting School.

The pupil leadership team are thrilled as for many of them they have worked on this initiative for a number of years.

Strengths identified in the assessment were;

  • A commitment to children’s rights is embedded in the schools vision, values and curriculum. A strategic approach has placed the CRC at the heart of the schools ethos.
  • Children demonstrate a good knowledge and understanding of rights.
  • Rights are explicitly linked to all areas of the schools work
  • A strong focus on health and well-being of pupils
  • Pupils are listened to and involved in decision making at a variety of levels

bank book and notes

School Bank Launched

As part of our Financial Literacy and World of Work curriculum, with the help of GIFA and sponsored by Aztec we have set up a school bank and shop.

All children in KS2 recive a Capelles credit to strat them off. Then depending on what leadership roles they undertake they receive a salary in "Hautes" The more responsibility - the higher the salary.

Bankers then enter salaries into the bank books each week and each half term, the children can earn 10% interest on their balance.

Children can then choose to save or shop in their shop, curated and run by the shopkeepers.

Healthy Snack Approach Launched

Our Pupil Lead F.O.O.D group have worked alongside the Health Improvement Commission to develop our Healthy Food approach.

The pupils surveyed the parents and talked about the issues.

As a result the children are asked to bring fruit or vegetables for snack time. They have created hedge veg style boxes for the fruit donated by Les Coutils to be displayed in.

We even made a video to support other schools to get involved. This can be found on the Health Improvement Commission website; https://healthimprovement.gg/news/article/fruit-and-vegetables-are-snack-choice-hautes-capelles-primary-school

Pudsey bear cheerleading children

Pudsey Bearpee Challenge

The Pupil Leadership Team asked the school to support Children in Need undertaking the bearpee challenge!

Each class completed in excess of 1000 bearpees during the week and collected nearly £700 in donations. They used their rights to support a national campaign to support others in need whilst building their physical fitness and stamina.

A whole school event with parents and carers to finish off our bearpees was supported by the bear himself. Thank you Pudsey!

Geography Take Home Challenge

Geography Take Home Challenge Exhibition Summer 23

On the 22nd of September 2023 we held an exhibition of the childrens take home challenge from over the summer holidays. We had volcano models, books about new places in the world explored, models of landmarks, art work, maps and exploding volcanoes. We combined this with an open session for parents to come into the classrooms to see their children's current learning and books.

Our families work together to create these exhibits, which we all marvel at! Watch out for our next home school challenge!

Our School Values

Over 2023, we asked the children, staff and parents what our main values should be. The children generated a large list of values they thought they should demonstrate as a model Capelles student. The parents made use of padlet to create an online wall of what they believed were the most important values our children should have.

From all of these ideas, the most common threads were Respect and kindness.

So our Four school values are

We are aspirational

We are kind

We are respectful

We work together

Children are awarded dojo points for these and Stars of the Week are selected against these values.

Well Being Matters - Emotional Literacy

This year, all children, every day check in about how they are feeling as they come into school. Every classroom has a check in board where children can self identify their emotion.

Each Wednesday on Well Being Wednesday, we do a more formal check in with the children where they write a note to their teacher about how they are feeling. These wellbeing check-ins mean that the staff team are able to quickly support children where needed or celebrate the wonderful things they are excited about.

We have used the Colour Monster book as a starting point to help children use a wider vocabularly for describing their emotions, recognising that a range of emotions is normal and healthy for our wellbeing.

If you would like to know more or would like further help regarding childrens emotions, contact the School Partnership Team on support@capelles.sch.gg

Fantastic fund raising for Turkey and Syria

On February the 17th, along with all the States Primary schools, our children joined in with a Non-uniform day dressing in colours of the Turkish and Syrian flags to raise funds to support children and their families following the devastating earthquake. As as school we raised  £1000 and along with the other schools raised around £8,000 which was matched by the Overseas Aid Commission.

This was an amazing show of our Island children working together to help others.

Thank you to all of our families for supporting the children.

New Class Charters Jan 23

Our Rights Leader team monitored the class charters in Autumn term 2022 and the feedback was given to teachers during a training day in January 2023. The result of which was bigger and better Class charters.

The children asked for larger text, the language of Duty Bearers and Rights Holders to be used and links to the icons they are displaying around school.

The children asked, the staff listened!

Good to be me posters

Good to be Me Celebration

In November and December 2022, the children worked together with family members to create "Good to be Me" posters. We wanted to celebrate and recognise the children's achievements, talents and interests. These are on display in the halls and the children and staff both enjoy discussing and celebrating the children. As an alternative, parents could send in videos which are on show in the two TV screens in the foyers. Please take a moment to look and read them - they are joy on a page!

This celebration built on the foundation of the weekly assemblies where children bring in and show certificates, trophies or medals for activities they undertake out of school.

Safer Internet Day

Our Year 6 children showcased their learning about online safety on ITV Channel Days on Safer Internet Day.

The whole school had a focused theme week of online safety. These messages were reinforced through assemblies, class learning activities and visitors. Our head teacher was even interviewed on the radio.
